With Wildhorn Africa, your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel or homestay in Kigali and take you on a scenic 120 km journey—about a 2-hour drive—to Musanze. Upon arrival, the adventure begins with a biking experience that not only welcomes you to the city but also allows you to discover why Musanze is the second largest city in Rwanda after Kigali. As you ride, you’ll take in the region’s stunning landscapes and vibrant atmosphere. Later in the afternoon, you will enjoy a relaxing boating excursion on the Mukungwa River before returning to your hotel for the evening.

With Wildhorn Africa, your day begins at 6:00 am with an early drive to the RDB headquarters for registration and a briefing. From there, you will embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking adventure, which can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on the gorilla family’s location. After this incredible encounter, you’ll break for lunch before heading in the afternoon to the Gorilla Guardians village. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in Rwanda’s rich culture and history, guided by former gorilla poachers who have transformed into cultural ambassadors. The experience includes engaging in traditional wedding ceremonies, learning from traditional healers, and discovering the preparation of local foods and banana beer. Later in the evening, you will return to your hotel for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, Wildhorn Africa will take you on a 45-minute drive from Musanze city to Burera, where you will visit the Roots of Nyabingi Heritage Center. The experience begins with a cultural pilgrimage tour that reveals Rwanda’s diverse traditions and spiritual beliefs. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a scenic boat cruise on the Twin Lakes, surrounded by panoramic views of volcanoes and rich historical landscapes. The day continues with an authentic community interaction, where you’ll join locals in handcraft-making sessions and learn how many of Rwanda’s traditional materials are skillfully created.

After an 8:00 am breakfast, Wildhorn Africa will take you on a drive to the Mugera Nature Trail, where you’ll set out on a refreshing nature walk leading to the heritage center. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of colorful bird species while also gaining insights into the conservation efforts surrounding the Rugezi Marshland. The day’s adventure continues with an engaging community experience, followed by a serene canoeing excursion along the Mukungwa River.

The trail becomes steep in certain sections, and having a porter not only helps with carrying your daypack but also provides extra support while navigating the slippery paths on the descent.

After breakfast and checking out of your hotel, Wildhorn Africa will take you to explore the historic Musanze Caves, formed centuries ago. These caves once served as a refuge during times of war and later became a tragic site during the genocide, making them a place of deep historical and cultural importance to the local community. Following your visit, you will depart Musanze and drive back to Kigali, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or homestay. End of the tour!
