Zanzibar to Kogatande Airstrip
Upon arrival at Kogatende Airstrip, you’ll be greeted by your professional driver-guide and set out for a full day of game drives in the Kogatende and Bologonja regions. This area is currently alive with the Great Migration, as vast herds gather in preparation for the dramatic Mara River crossings. From the riverbanks to the Gardenia Valley, stretching into the Nyamalumbwa Plains and the Sand River, the landscape is filled with movement and anticipation. The Great Wildebeest Migration—an annual journey of over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles across the Serengeti and Masai Mara—is one of the planet’s most extraordinary natural spectacles.
Northern Serengeti National Park
After an early breakfast, set out on a game drive in the Northern Serengeti, a remote and less-visited part of the park nestled between the Central Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. Its inaccessibility means fewer crowds, rewarding travelers with serene landscapes and incredible wildlife encounters. Here, the Great Migration unfolds as more than two million wildebeests undertake their 800-kilometer journey—the largest land migration of mammals on Earth. The timing of this movement follows the seasonal growth of nutrient-rich grasses on the short-grass plains during the rains, providing safe calving grounds where predators are easier to spot. As the plains dry out, the herds push onward toward the western corridor in search of fresh grazing, while the northern stretches of the ecosystem, though blessed with higher rainfall, offer less nutritious grasses, driving the cycle ever forward.
Nothern Serengeti national Park
After breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive in the Northern Serengeti, with the goal of witnessing the dramatic Mara River crossings. A safari in this part of the Serengeti is truly rewarding, offering the chance to encounter an incredible range of wildlife. The park is home to the iconic Big Five—elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, and leopard—alongside wildebeests, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, antelopes, impalas, and waterbuck. Each year, the Great Migration brings nearly two million wildebeests and other grazers through the Serengeti, creating one of Africa’s most spectacular natural events. While the exact timing shifts with rainfall, the migration follows a fairly consistent annual cycle that showcases the dynamic rhythms of life on the savannah.
Central Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro
Begin the day with an early morning drive toward the Central Serengeti, where the Great Migration is typically found between late July and mid-October as herds cross the famous Mara River into Kenya’s Maasai Mara before returning to the Serengeti. This season offers prime chances to witness dramatic river crossings, where predators often await their prey in the water. Your guide will lead you to the best vantage points for unforgettable sightings, from large prides of lions to herds of wildebeests and zebras, often surrounding your vehicle. Along the way, you may also encounter hippo pools and the striking kopjes—ancient volcanic outcrops that provide shelter for wildlife and sweeping views over the endless plains. After a full day of game viewing, you’ll continue on to Karatu, with an evening stay at Farm of Dreams Lodge, a drive of approximately 4 to 5 hours.
Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha
After breakfast, your driver-guide will be ready to pick you up and begin the day’s safari. The Ngorongoro Crater is a remarkable haven for wildlife, sheltering an incredible variety of species, including the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo. Within the crater, you’ll also encounter wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, hyenas, jackals, hippos, and antelopes. It boasts the highest density of lions in the world and is one of the few places where the endangered black rhino can still be spotted. Interestingly, giraffes are absent here, as the steep crater walls act as a natural barrier to their movement. After your game drive, you’ll head back to Arusha Airport to board your flight to Zanzibar.
