Arrival and Transfer to Nyakalengija – Trek to Nyabitaba Hut
The journey is begun with a road transfer to the Rwenzori trailhead at Nyakalengija, where registration, briefing, and porter allocation are conducted. The trek is then commenced through cultivated foothills and dense montane forest, with gradual ascents and river crossings setting the tone for the days ahead. Nyabitaba Hut is reached in the afternoon, positioned on a ridge with expansive views over the Mubuku Valley. Overnight accommodation is provided at Nyabitaba Hut.
Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut
The trail is continued through thick bamboo and moss-laden forest as the terrain becomes more rugged and humid. Several streams are crossed using wooden bridges while the forest canopy slowly opens into a higher montane zone. John Matte Hut is reached in the late afternoon, situated within the Bigo Bog area and surrounded by dramatic vegetation. Overnight accommodation is provided at John Matte Hut.
John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut
This day is characterized by a challenging crossing of the Upper Bigo Bog, where boardwalks and muddy sections demand patience and balance. The vegetation transitions into afro-alpine landscapes dominated by giant lobelias and groundsels. Bujuku Hut is reached beside Lake Bujuku, offering views toward Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Overnight accommodation is provided at Bujuku Hut.
Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut
A steeper ascent is undertaken via the Scott Elliott Pass, where rocky sections and thinner air begin to be felt. The environment becomes increasingly alpine, with rocky slopes replacing bogs and forest. Elena Hut is reached at a high elevation, positioned strategically for summit attempts. Overnight accommodation is provided at Elena Hut.
Elena Hut to Margherita Peak – Descend to Kitandara Hut
An early start is made for the summit attempt on Margherita Peak, involving glacier travel, rope work, and technical scrambling under the guidance of trained mountain staff. After reaching the summit or turning back depending on conditions, a long descent is undertaken toward the Kitandara Valley. Kitandara Hut is reached near alpine lakes, offering a dramatic and serene setting. Overnight accommodation is provided at Kitandara Hut.
Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut
The trail is continued across high ridges and steep descents, passing through alpine valleys with expansive views and sparse vegetation. Guy Yeoman Hut is reached after a demanding but scenic trek, positioned in a remote and rugged section of the circuit. Overnight accommodation is provided at Guy Yeoman Hut.
Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyabitaba Hut
A long descent is undertaken as the route reconnects with lower elevations, re-entering bamboo and montane forest zones. The change in vegetation and temperature is clearly felt as Nyabitaba Hut is reached once again. Overnight accommodation is provided at Nyabitaba Hut.
Nyabitaba Hut to Nyakalengija – Transfer to Kasese
The final descent is completed back to Nyakalengija trailhead, where the trek officially concludes. A road transfer is then provided to Kasese or nearby lodge accommodation for rest and recovery after the mountain expedition. Overnight accommodation is provided at a lodge in Kasese or surrounding areas.
Departure or Extension
The itinerary is concluded with onward travel to Entebbe or continuation to other Ugandan destinations, depending on individual travel plans. Optional extensions to wildlife safaris or cultural experiences can be arranged.
