Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the most important and biologically rich protected areas in Central Africa. Located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) near the town of Bukavu on the western shore of Lake Kivu, the park is best known for its exceptional eastern lowland gorilla trekking, lush rainforests, and dramatic volcanic mountains. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last remaining strongholds of the Grauer’s gorilla (also called eastern lowland gorilla), the largest gorilla subspecies in the world.
Brief History of Kahuzi-Biega National Park
Kahuzi-Biega National Park was established in 1970 by Belgian conservationist Adrien Deschryver to protect the endangered eastern lowland gorillas. The park was named after Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, two extinct volcanoes located within its boundaries.
In 1980, Kahuzi-Biega was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional biodiversity. Despite facing challenges such as armed conflict and illegal resource exploitation, the park remains a vital conservation area thanks to the efforts of rangers, conservationists, and local communities.
What to Do at Kahuzi-Biega National Park
1. Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is the park’s main attraction. Unlike the smaller and more elusive mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas are larger and often found in larger family groups. Treks typically start early in the morning and can last from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.
What to expect:
Guided hikes through dense rainforest
One hour with a habituated gorilla family
Opportunities to observe gorilla behavior at close range
2. Hiking and Mountaineering
The park’s volcanic terrain offers excellent hiking experiences:
Mount Kahuzi (3,308 meters): Offers panoramic views of the forest and Lake Kivu.
Mount Biega (2,790 meters): Less frequently visited but rich in birdlife and forest vegetation.
3. Bird Watching
Kahuzi-Biega is a paradise for birders, with over 350 bird species, including:
Congo peafowl (an endemic and elusive bird)
African green broadbill
Yellow-crested helmet-shrike
4. Nature Walks and Forest Exploration
Guided nature walks allow visitors to discover waterfalls, rare plant species, primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys, and scenic riverbanks within the lowland and montane rainforest.
5. Cultural Experiences
Engage with local communities living near the park, including the Shi and Bashi people, to learn about their traditional farming, crafts, and conservation efforts.
