What Exactly Is a Safari?

Where Are the Best Places to Go on Safari?

When Is the Best Time to Go on Safari?

Africa is beautiful year-round, but your safari experience will be shaped by the seasons. Generally, the dry season—when vegetation thins and animals gather around water sources—is considered the best time for wildlife viewing. This period typically runs from June to October in most regions.

If you want to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, the timing becomes even more nuanced. The migration is a year-long cycle with different highlights in different months. For river crossings in the Masai Mara, July to September is prime. For calving season in the Serengeti, January to March is ideal.

Wet seasons, while less popular, offer lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent birdlife. Plus, many camps offer lower rates during this time, making it a great choice for budget-conscious travelers who don’t mind the occasional rain shower.

🗓️ Summary Table

Month Best Country Key Highlights
January Kenya Prime safari season, dry and clear skies
February Tanzania Serengeti calving, Zanzibar beaches
March Uganda Gorilla trekking, fewer crowds
April Egypt Ideal weather for historic explorations
May Madagascar Start of dry season, wildlife, and hiking
June Zambia Safari season, Victoria Falls at full flow
July Botswana Okavango Delta floods, excellent wildlife
August Namibia Stunning desert views, game in Etosha
September Zimbabwe Peak safari time, Victoria Falls scenic
October South Africa Whale watching, safaris, Cape floral region
November Rwanda Gorilla trekking, lush scenery
December Ethiopia Dry season start, cultural festivals, trekking
