4-Day Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking Tour

This 4-day adventure with Wildhorn Africa begins and ends in Kigali. On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be greeted and transferred to Volcanoes National Park for your overnight stay. Day two offers the unforgettable experience of trekking to see the mountain gorillas, while day three takes you to encounter another rare primate—the golden monkey. On the final day, you’ll be driven back to Kigali International Airport in time for your onward flight.

Arrival at Kigali International Airport

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by Wildhorn Africa and given a short orientation before setting off for Volcanoes National Park. The scenic drive takes you through Rwanda’s picturesque rolling hills and lush landscapes of the northwest, passing banana plantations along a smooth paved road. After about three hours, you’ll reach your lodge, conveniently located at the foot of the mountains near the park ranger station. Settle in, enjoy dinner, and spend the night at La Palme Hotel.

Gorilla Trekking in the Volcanoes National Park

Begin your day with an early breakfast before heading to the Kinigi Park headquarters at around 6:30 am. Today marks the highlight of your safari with Wildhorn Africa—the gorilla trek. By 7:00 am, you’ll arrive at the ranger station for a briefing and guide assignment before venturing into the forest.

You’ll track one of Rwanda’s eight habituated gorilla groups, accompanied by skilled ranger guides who will lead the way and clear paths as needed. Each group is limited to just eight visitors, and the trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements across their expansive territory of up to 40 kilometers.

Once you find them, you’ll spend a magical hour in the presence of these gentle giants—an experience that will remain etched in your memory forever. After your time with the gorillas, you’ll gradually exit the forest and return to your lodge for some well-earned rest.

Golden Monkey Trekking in the Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for your second primate adventure—tracking the endangered golden monkeys. This trek is relatively easy and typically lasts 1 to 2 hours. Golden monkeys, a rare species of old-world primates found only in the Virunga Mountain range, are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. They live in large groups of up to 90 individuals, usually led by a dominant male.

In Volcanoes National Park, there are two habituated groups, one of which numbers around 80 to 100 members and resides at the base of Mt. Sabyinyo. Like gorilla trekking, golden monkey excursions take place in the morning, with visitors allowed one unforgettable hour to observe and photograph them. Afterward, you’ll return to your lodge with Wildhorn Africa for dinner and an overnight stay.

Departure

After breakfast at 9:00 am, you’ll depart for Kigali, enjoying the scenic drive back. Upon arrival, have lunch before continuing to the airport for your outbound flight, marking the end of your adventure with Wildhorn Africa.
