7 Days Rongai Route – Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

The climb is commenced at Rongai Gate, where registration formalities are completed before the trek begins through cultivated farmland and into montane forest. The forest zone is characterized by towering trees, birdlife, and occasional sightings of colobus monkeys. The ascent is gradual and measured, allowing the body to begin adapting to altitude. After several hours of trekking, Simba Camp is reached at approximately 2,600 meters.
The evening is typically spent resting, hydrating, and receiving a briefing from the lead guide regarding altitude awareness and the days ahead.

A steady climb is undertaken through open moorland terrain, where expansive views across the Kenyan plains begin to unfold. The vegetation transitions to shrubs and heather, and the air becomes cooler and thinner. The pace is deliberately slow to encourage acclimatization.
Second Cave Camp is reached at approximately 3,450 meters.
In the afternoon, a short acclimatization walk is often conducted before returning to camp for rest and dinner.

The terrain becomes steeper as the trek continues toward Kikelewa Camp at around 3,600 meters. Giant groundsels and unique alpine flora begin to dominate the landscape, providing a dramatic visual shift.
The afternoon is reserved for rest, hydration, and monitoring of altitude symptoms under the supervision of experienced guides.

A shorter but steeper ascent is undertaken toward Mawenzi Tarn, situated beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak at approximately 4,330 meters. The campsite is set in a striking amphitheater-like setting, offering some of the most scenic views on the mountain.
An acclimatization hike may be conducted in the afternoon before returning to camp. This day plays a crucial role in preparing climbers for summit night.

The trek proceeds across the lunar-like saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This alpine desert zone is stark and expansive, with minimal vegetation and wide open views. The pace remains slow and steady as Kibo Hut Camp is approached at approximately 4,700 meters.
An early dinner is served, and climbers are advised to rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

The summit push is begun shortly after midnight. Headlamps illuminate the steep ascent toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, where the first signs of dawn may be witnessed over the African plains. The final stretch to Uhuru Peak, standing at 5,895 meters, is undertaken across the crater rim.

Upon reaching the summit, photographs are taken at the iconic sign marking Africa’s highest point. The descent is then begun back to Kibo Camp for rest and refreshment before continuing downward to Horombo Hut at approximately 3,720 meters.
This day is regarded as the most demanding yet most rewarding stage of the expedition.

The final descent is undertaken through moorland and rainforest zones toward Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, summit certificates are issued to successful climbers. Transfer back to the hotel in Moshi or Arusha is arranged.
A well-earned rest is typically enjoyed following the completion of the climb.
