Rwenzori Mountains Full Climbing Itinerary (Central Circuit + Kilembe Trail)

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, a scenic transfer to Kasese is arranged. Tea plantations, crater lakes, and distant mountain silhouettes accompany the drive westward. A comprehensive briefing is conducted in the evening, climbing gear is inspected, and safety protocols are reviewed.

Registration is completed at park headquarters before the trek begins through cultivated foothills into dense montane forest. Blue monkeys and colobus monkeys are frequently observed along the trail. A steady ascent is maintained toward Nyabitaba Hut, where the first night on the mountain is spent.

The route descends toward the Kurt Shafer Bridge before rising into bamboo forest and heather zones. Muddy sections and boardwalk bog crossings are navigated carefully. The Bujuku River valley opens ahead, and altitude gain becomes noticeable.

The Lower Bigo Bog is crossed before Lake Bujuku appears dramatically beneath Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. Giant lobelias dominate the alpine scenery. Controlled pacing supports acclimatization.

A steep ascent leads toward Scott Elliot Pass before turning toward Elena Hut. Temperatures drop significantly as alpine terrain becomes rocky and exposed. Summit preparation is conducted, and early rest is prioritized.

A pre-dawn start is undertaken. Glacier crossings, ice sections, and rock scrambling are navigated using crampons and safety equipment under guide supervision. Margherita Peak is reached at sunrise, offering expansive views across Central Africa. Following summit time, descent is made to Elena Hut and continued to Kitandara Hut.

Freshfield Pass is crossed, providing panoramic views of the southern Rwenzori valleys. The descent continues toward Guy Yeoman Hut through alpine vegetation zones.

The trail descends through bamboo and forest zones back to park headquarters, completing the Central Circuit section. Transfer to the Kilembe side is arranged to begin the scenic descent extension.

The Kilembe Trail ascent begins through forested slopes with dramatic valley views. Birdlife and primates are frequently encountered. Sine Hut is reached after a moderate climb.

The trail transitions into bamboo and heather zones. Boardwalk sections across boggy terrain are navigated. Mutinda Camp offers striking views of the Rwenzori peaks.

Bamwanjara Pass is crossed, and alpine lakes are revealed along the trail. Higher altitude exposure continues to support acclimatization and full mountain immersion.

The descent is completed through varied vegetation zones. Upon completion, transfer back to Kasese is arranged for overnight rest.

Transfer back to Entebbe is arranged. Optional safari extensions to Queen Elizabeth National Park may be incorporated.
