Rwenzori Mountains Full Climbing Itinerary (Central Circuit + Kilembe Trail)
Where Africa’s equatorial glaciers meet ancient rainforest and high-altitude moorland, one of the continent’s most demanding and complete mountain journeys is undertaken. The Rwenzori Mountains Full Climbing Itinerary (Central Circuit + Kilembe Trail) is designed as a comprehensive traverse of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, combining the classic Central Circuit ascent toward Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley with the scenic descent through the dramatic Kilembe Trail. Within Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a full spectrum of ecosystems is experienced, from thick montane forest and bamboo zones to alpine bogs, glacial valleys, and snow-capped summits. This extended route allows deeper acclimatization, broader landscape exposure, and a more immersive understanding of the Rwenzori massif than either trail alone.

When is the best time to travel?
The most favorable climbing conditions are typically experienced during the relatively drier months of June to August and December to February. During these periods, rainfall is reduced, glacier sections are more stable, and trail conditions are comparatively manageable, although mud and moisture remain inherent to the Rwenzori ecosystem. Due to the equatorial alpine climate, weather remains unpredictable throughout the year, and summit success is largely influenced by physical preparation, acclimatization strategy, and weather windows rather than season alone.
